SUMMARY:[IRN] Symposium 'Educational perspectives on emotions in teaching and learning for sustainability – Conceptualisations\, methodological questions\, empirical insights\, and pathways for future research'
DESCRIPTION:On behalf of the WERA International Research Network EMESER (Emotions in Environmental and Sustainability Education Research)\, we are pleased to share this call for submissions for the symposium ‘Educational perspectives on emotions in teaching and learning for sustainability – Conceptualisations\, methodological questions\, empirical insights\, and pathways for future research’ taking place online on April 10-11\, 2025. \nAbstract submission deadline: 31 December 2024 \nCommunication of review status: 31 January 2025 \nTo submit an abstract\, send an email to Sissy Kreid at sissy.kreid@ur.de. For questions regarding the symposium\, contact Emma Heikkilä at emma.heikkila@helsinki.fi. \nFor more information\, visit the EMESER page. \n\nDescription \nEmotions are an increasingly important focus within the research field of environmental and sustainability education (ESE). Learners and educators experience a wide range of emotions when they enter into learning environments\, while dealing with controversial and existential issues of (un)sustainability or as a result of education processes. The connection between emotions and (un)sustainability are manifold. On the one hand\, the multiple developments and crises of (un)sustainability are provoking different emotional reactions (like climate anxiety) or responses (outside-in perspective). On the other hand\, emotions are a main driver for engagement\, for example when learners are transforming their sustainability-related rage into concrete actions (inside-out-perspective). Educational organizations can create room for recognising and dealing with emotions and thereby empower individuals and groups to take action. Nevertheless\, there is only little systematic knowledge on how to deal with or address emotions in ESE. Additionally\, the question of how to address learners’ and/or educators’ emotions (including emotions of the public\, researchers etc.) goes along with fundamental ethical questions (for example\, how to avoid using emotions instrumentally). There is a growing number of studies on eco-emotions\, climate anxiety\, or grief mostly from a psychological perspective. Nevertheless\, the state of research on emotions in the context of ESE is still insufficiently systematized and other disciplinary perspectives (e.g.\, sociological\, feminist) are currently underexplored. Key questions are too rarely discussed\, like: \n\nWhich conceptualizations of emotion from other fields of research are best suited for ESE?\nWhich research methods are used and might be beneficial in the future to conduct in-depth research into sustainability-related educational processes?\nHow have emotions been addressed in ESE practice to catalyze transformation for sustainability? What should didactic methods for working with emotions look like and what role do educators play?\nWhat are implicit (normative/disciplinary/ideological/political) assumptions in addressing emotions in ESE research?\nWhat are aims and pathways for future research regarding emotions in ESE?\n\nWith the symposium we want to contribute to advancing the growing research field on emotions and ESE and create space for reflection and discussion between multiple perspectives. The symposium is part of the activities of an International Research Network called EMESER\, which brings researchers with an interest in emotions in ESE together and thereby broadens and strengthens research on emotions in ESE through encouraging discussion and collaboration. The symposium is free of charge. We invite abstracts for theoretical\, empirical and methodological contributions in line with this call. \nWe welcome scholars at any level of their academic career to contribute. A group of researchers from the network will select the contributions based on the quality and the fit to the core questions of the symposium. All submissions should deal with all three aspects: emotions\, sustainability\, and education. \nAbstracts should have a length of 500 words (excluding references) \n\nAbstract submission deadline: 31st of December\, 2024\nCommunication of review status: 31st of January\, 2025\n\nSubmissions can be sent to Sissy Kreid\, sissy.kreid@ur.de \nQuestions regarding the symposium can be sent to Emma Heikkilä\, emma.heikkila@helsinki.fi

SUMMARY:[Task Force] Webinar: "How to set up research projects for international collaborations"
DESCRIPTION:🚀 Exciting News! 🚀 \nJoin the WERA Task Force “Global Research in Extended Education” for a webinar on setting up research projects for international collaborations!\n📅9 April 2025\, Wednesday\n🕒3 PM UK/4PM CET/12 AM KST\n📝 Register for free: https://forms.gle/vVGavXTwfFwq3ahQA \n\n\nABSTRACT\nInternational research collaborations often use approaches and methods from comparative education research. The essence of such collaborations lies in a shared academic interest or a common definition of a problem to be subjected to comparative analysis. The primary objective is to derive solutions to the problem\, as defined by the participants\, through international cooperation. At the project level\, comparable or differentiating results – representing both similarities and differences – emerge as secondary outcomes. In the course of collaborative project work\, intercultural challenges arise\, which often only become apparent as the process unfolds. The webinar will explore both the theoretical and practical frameworks underpinning international cooperation in education and highlight the opportunities and potential risks associated with international comparative collaboration.

SUMMARY:[IRN] Deadline: Call for abstracts for Special Issue on School Leadership During Wartime
DESCRIPTION:Journal of Educational Administration – JEA \nGuest Editors: Chen Schechter & Mary Gutman \nOn behalf of the WERA International Research Network (IRN) Minority and Minoritised Teachers: Exploring Social Justice in Schools Around the World\, we are pleased to share this call for abstracts for a Special Issue on ‘School Leadership During Wartime’. \nWar engenders a climate of persistent collective trauma\, affecting all facets of life. Schools in conflict zones often contend with chronic exposure to life-threatening violence\, displacement\, and community fragmentation (Drozdek et al.\, 2020). In these circumstances\, school principals must address complex challenges\, including safeguarding the physical and mental well-being of students and staff\, responding to the community’s evolving emotional and social needs\, and ensuring the continuity of education despite formidable obstacles (Orucu et al.\, 2023). \nThis special issue seeks to bridge a critical gap in the literature by offering novel insights into school leadership in wartime and under continuous security threats. Recognizing the complexities of wartime school management\, we aim to conceptualize and empirically explore wartime educational leadership from diverse perspectives. \nSubmission Guidelines\nWe primarily welcome empirical studies but will consider theoretical papers. \nPlease submit a structured abstract (400 words) including:\n• Rationale\n• Purpose of the study\n• Methods\n• Preliminary results (if available)\n• Theoretical and practical contributions \nKey Dates\n• Abstract submission deadline: 20 March 2025\n• Decisions on abstracts: 30 March 2025\n• Full manuscript submission: Late summer (tentative) \nUpon acceptance of abstracts\, authors will be invited to submit full papers\, which should be between 6\,000 and 8\,000 words\, inclusive of references\, figure captions\, and endnotes. \nFor inquiries or further information\, please contact chen.schechter@biu.sc.il; mgutman@emef.ac.il \nFor more details about the journal\, visit: Journal of Educational Administration. \nFor the full call\, see the PDF below. \nCall for Abstracts Special Issue Wartime Leadership

SUMMARY:[IRN] Deadline: Call for chapters for edited book 'Minority School Leadership in Crises: Global Perspectives'
DESCRIPTION:Deadline: 15 March 2025 \n\nSchool leaders play a pivotal role in fostering stability and resilience within educational settings\, particularly during times of crisis. This responsibility is even more pronounced in communities with minority and minoritized populations. While “minority” refers to groups that are numerically smaller within a society\, “minoritized” underscores the systemic processes that marginalize these groups\, often framing them as “the other.” Recognizing this distinction is crucial for understanding the unique challenges these school leaders face as they navigate resource shortages\, cultural complexities\, and urgent crises while supporting students\, staff\, and the wider community. Recent global crises—such as the COVID-19 pandemic\, natural disasters\, and socio-political conflicts—have underscored the critical importance of effective school leadership in these communities. This edited volume aims to explore the global experiences of minority and minoritized school leaders\, emphasizing the innovative strategies they employ to build resilience in crises. \n\n\n\nWe invite scholars and practitioners to contribute chapters offering theoretical\, empirical\, qualitative\, or quantitative insights into the critical roles these school leaders play in responding to emergencies. \n\n\n\nResearchers and scholars are invited to submit a 300–500-word abstract of the proposed chapter (including the sub-title\, focus\, theme\, main findings\, and value of the research study)\, by March 15\, 2025\, by email to mgutman@emef.ac.il. \n\n\n\nFor more details\, see the full call.

SUMMARY:[IRN] Deadline: Call for submissions for Symposium on ‘Educational perspectives on emotions in teaching and learning for sustainability – Conceptualisations\, methodological questions\, empirical insights\, and pathways for future research’
Many children born this century will never know a society that isn’t dominated by digital technology! \n \nDigital literacy is becoming more and more important\, but how are we ensuring that young people’s skills in this area are developing in the way they will need to participate safely in a highly digital world? \n \nICILS is the only international large-scale assessment that focuses solely on digital literacy education. It directly measures and reports on fundamental digital competencies for participation in the digital world. The study measures student achievement in Computer and Information Literacy (CIL) and Computational Thinking (CT). \n \nICILS also collects extensive targeted data relating to the contextual factors associated with students’ digital literacy learning in and outside of school. ICILS supports countries to make informed decisions about how best to prepare students for life in an age of constantly evolving digital technologies. \n \nThe Launch of the ICILS 2023 International Report and Results will take place on Tuesday\, 12 November from 10:00am Central European Time. \n \nThe livestreamed event will present results and key findings from IEA’s ICILS 2023 International Report. \n \nHosted in partnership with IEA and Aarhus University in Copenhagen\, the launch event will highlight new data collected from ICILS 2023 that are relevant for policy and practice. The event will be livestreamed\, and all are welcome to attend. We also look forward to hearing remarks from the European Commission on the day of the release. \n \nTo join and follow the event live on 12 November\, register using this link.

While South Korea was a war-torn society with low literacy levels\, today its young people achieve the highest level of education\, and it has become a role model of education-driven nation-building and resilience. However\, Korean school system struggles with educational inequalities and mental health problems due to its reliance on high-stakes testing and private tutoring. What lessons can developing nations learn from Korea? How can the Global South achieve SDG in effective and efficient yet holistic and equitable ways? What are the key enablers (protective factors) of at-risk students’ academic resilience in South Africa? Drawing upon his research using large-scale international data such as TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study)\, Prof. Jaekyung Lee shares cross-cultural policy insights for educational transformations in South Africa. \n  \nBIO \n\n\n\n\n\nProf Jaekyung Lee (Ph.D. University of Chicago) is a professor and former dean of education at the University at Buffalo\, SUNY. Being a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association (AERA)\, Prof Lee is an international leader in educational policy research\, assessment and evaluation\, particularly on the issues of educational equity and accountability. He has authored several books on this topic\, including The Anatomy of Achievement Gaps (Oxford University Press\, 2016)\, and Centering Whole-Child Development in Global Education Reform (Routledge\, 2022). Being a Fulbright Global inform Scholar and World Education Research Association (WERA) Visiting Researcher\, Lee also leads international education research project to inform evidence-based policy interventions for disadvantaged and marginalized students in the world.
