For questions regarding the symposium\, contact Emma Heikkilä at emma.heikkila@helsinki.fi. \nFor more information\, visit the EMESER page. \n\nDescription \nEmotions are an increasingly important focus within the research field of environmental and sustainability education (ESE). Learners and educators experience a wide range of emotions when they enter into learning environments\, while dealing with controversial and existential issues of (un)sustainability or as a result of education processes. The connection between emotions and (un)sustainability are manifold. On the one hand\, the multiple developments and crises of (un)sustainability are provoking different emotional reactions (like climate anxiety) or responses (outside-in perspective). On the other hand\, emotions are a main driver for engagement\, for example when learners are transforming their sustainability-related rage into concrete actions (inside-out-perspective). Educational organizations can create room for recognising and dealing with emotions and thereby empower individuals and groups to take action. Nevertheless\, there is only little systematic knowledge on how to deal with or address emotions in ESE. Additionally\, the question of how to address learners’ and/or educators’ emotions (including emotions of the public\, researchers etc.) goes along with fundamental ethical questions (for example\, how to avoid using emotions instrumentally). There is a growing number of studies on eco-emotions\, climate anxiety\, or grief mostly from a psychological perspective. Nevertheless\, the state of research on emotions in the context of ESE is still insufficiently systematized and other disciplinary perspectives (e.g.\, sociological\, feminist) are currently underexplored. Key questions are too rarely discussed\, like: \n\nWhich conceptualizations of emotion from other fields of research are best suited for ESE?\nWhich research methods are used and might be beneficial in the future to conduct in-depth research into sustainability-related educational processes?\nHow have emotions been addressed in ESE practice to catalyze transformation for sustainability? What should didactic methods for working with emotions look like and what role do educators play?\nWhat are implicit (normative/disciplinary/ideological/political) assumptions in addressing emotions in ESE research?\nWhat are aims and pathways for future research regarding emotions in ESE?\n\nWith the symposium we want to contribute to advancing the growing research field on emotions and ESE and create space for reflection and discussion between multiple perspectives. The symposium is part of the activities of an International Research Network called EMESER\, which brings researchers with an interest in emotions in ESE together and thereby broadens and strengthens research on emotions in ESE through encouraging discussion and collaboration. The symposium is free of charge. We invite abstracts for theoretical\, empirical and methodological contributions in line with this call. \nWe welcome scholars at any level of their academic career to contribute. A group of researchers from the network will select the contributions based on the quality and the fit to the core questions of the symposium. At the project level\, comparable or differentiating results – representing both similarities and differences – emerge as secondary outcomes. Schools in conflict zones often contend with chronic exposure to life-threatening violence\, displacement\, and community fragmentation (Drozdek et al.\, 2020). In these circumstances\, school principals must address complex challenges\, including safeguarding the physical and mental well-being of students and staff\, responding to the community’s evolving emotional and social needs\, and ensuring the continuity of education despite formidable obstacles (Orucu et al.\, 2023). \nThis special issue seeks to bridge a critical gap in the literature by offering novel insights into school leadership in wartime and under continuous security threats. This responsibility is even more pronounced in communities with minority and minoritized populations. While “minority” refers to groups that are numerically smaller within a society\, “minoritized” underscores the systemic processes that marginalize these groups\, often framing them as “the other.” Recognizing this distinction is crucial for understanding the unique challenges these school leaders face as they navigate resource shortages\, cultural complexities\, and urgent crises while supporting students\, staff\, and the wider community. Recent global crises—such as the COVID-19 pandemic\, natural disasters\, and socio-political conflicts—have underscored the critical importance of effective school leadership in these communities. DESCRIPTION:On behalf of the WERA International Research Network ‘Education in the Anthropocene’ and Convener Nathanaël Wallenhorst\, we are pleased to invite the WERA community to the network’s kickoff and their next meetings. \nThe aim of this IRN will be to establish ‘Education in the Anthropocene’ as a sub-field of the educational sciences. The working group currently consists of 28 researchers from 11 countries and remains open to participation from other colleagues. The structure will be straightforward: the group will convene online four times a year for two-hour sessions. DESCRIPTION:The Journal of Research in Social Sciences and Language (JSSAL) \nMultilingualism in schools is a perennial topic in educational research. It is highly relevant today for several reasons: increasing globalization and population mobility\, high levels of international migration and refugee movements\, quick and easy access for individuals to digital language support tools. All of these factors contribute to increasing linguistic diversity among students around the world\, making multilingualism a key prerequisite for educational processes. \nThe aim of this special issue is to foster a deeper understanding of multilingualism in schools and to contribute to the advancement of inclusive and equitable educational practices\, by bringing together current empirical research on multilingualism in education from interdisciplinary perspectives. We invite scholars from various fields\, including but not limited to education\, linguistics\, psychology\,\nsociology and policy studies\, to join us in this endeavor by submitting their original research contributions. Learners and educators experience a wide range of emotions when they enter into learning environments\, while dealing with controversial and existential issues of (un)sustainability or as a result of education processes. The connection between emotions and (un)sustainability are manifold. On the one hand\, the multiple developments and crises of (un)sustainability are provoking different emotional reactions (like climate anxiety) or responses (outside-in perspective). On the other hand\, emotions are a main driver for engagement\, for example when learners are transforming their sustainability-related rage into concrete actions (inside-out-perspective). Educational organizations can create room for recognising and dealing with emotions and thereby empower individuals and groups to take action. Nevertheless\, there is only little systematic knowledge on how to deal with or address emotions in ESE. Additionally\, the question of how to address learners’ and/or educators’ emotions (including emotions of the public\, researchers etc.) goes along with fundamental ethical questions (for example\, how to avoid using emotions instrumentally). There is a growing number of studies on eco-emotions\, climate anxiety\, or grief mostly from a psychological perspective. Nevertheless\, the state of research on emotions in the context of ESE is still insufficiently systematized and other disciplinary perspectives (e.g.\, sociological\, feminist) are currently underexplored. Key questions are too rarely discussed\, like: \n\nWhich conceptualizations of emotion from other fields of research are best suited for ESE?\nWhich research methods are used and might be beneficial in the future to conduct in-depth research into sustainability-related educational processes?\nHow have emotions been addressed in ESE practice to catalyze transformation for sustainability? What should didactic methods for working with emotions look like and what role do educators play?\nWhat are implicit (normative/disciplinary/ideological/political) assumptions in addressing emotions in ESE research?\nWhat are aims and pathways for future research regarding emotions in ESE?\n\nWith the symposium we want to contribute to advancing the growing research field on emotions and ESE and create space for reflection and discussion between multiple perspectives. The symposium is part of the activities of an International Research Network called EMESER\, which brings researchers with an interest in emotions in ESE together and thereby broadens and strengthens research on emotions in ESE through encouraging discussion and collaboration. The symposium is free of charge. We invite abstracts for theoretical\, empirical and methodological contributions in line with this call. \nWe welcome scholars at any level of their academic career to contribute. A group of researchers from the network will select the contributions based on the quality and the fit to the core questions of the symposium. Many children born this century will never know a society that isn’t dominated by digital technology! \n \nDigital literacy is becoming more and more important\, but how are we ensuring that young people’s skills in this area are developing in the way they will need to participate safely in a highly digital world? \n \nICILS is the only international large-scale assessment that focuses solely on digital literacy education. It directly measures and reports on fundamental digital competencies for participation in the digital world. The study measures student achievement in Computer and Information Literacy (CIL) and Computational Thinking (CT). \n \nICILS also collects extensive targeted data relating to the contextual factors associated with students’ digital literacy learning in and outside of school. While South Korea was a war-torn society with low literacy levels\, today its young people achieve the highest level of education\, and it has become a role model of education-driven nation-building and resilience. However\, Korean school system struggles with educational inequalities and mental health problems due to its reliance on high-stakes testing and private tutoring. What lessons can developing nations learn from Korea? How can the Global South achieve SDG in effective and efficient yet holistic and equitable ways? What are the key enablers (protective factors) of at-risk students’ academic resilience in South Africa? Drawing upon his research using large-scale international data such as TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study)\, Prof. Jaekyung Lee shares cross-cultural policy insights for educational transformations in South Africa. \n  \nBIO \n\n\n\n\n\nProf Jaekyung Lee (Ph.D. University of Chicago) is a professor and former dean of education at the University at Buffalo\, SUNY.
