SUMMARY:[IRN] Deadline: Call for abstracts for Special Issue on School Leadership During Wartime
DESCRIPTION:Journal of Educational Administration – JEA \nGuest Editors: Chen Schechter & Mary Gutman \nOn behalf of the WERA International Research Network (IRN) Minority and Minoritised Teachers: Exploring Social Justice in Schools Around the World\, we are pleased to share this call for abstracts for a Special Issue on ‘School Leadership During Wartime’. \nWar engenders a climate of persistent collective trauma\, affecting all facets of life. Schools in conflict zones often contend with chronic exposure to life-threatening violence\, displacement\, and community fragmentation (Drozdek et al.\, 2020). In these circumstances\, school principals must address complex challenges\, including safeguarding the physical and mental well-being of students and staff\, responding to the community’s evolving emotional and social needs\, and ensuring the continuity of education despite formidable obstacles (Orucu et al.\, 2023). \nThis special issue seeks to bridge a critical gap in the literature by offering novel insights into school leadership in wartime and under continuous security threats. Recognizing the complexities of wartime school management\, we aim to conceptualize and empirically explore wartime educational leadership from diverse perspectives. \nSubmission Guidelines\nWe primarily welcome empirical studies but will consider theoretical papers. \nPlease submit a structured abstract (400 words) including:\n• Rationale\n• Purpose of the study\n• Methods\n• Preliminary results (if available)\n• Theoretical and practical contributions \nKey Dates\n• Abstract submission deadline: 20 March 2025\n• Decisions on abstracts: 30 March 2025\n• Full manuscript submission: Late summer (tentative) \nUpon acceptance of abstracts\, authors will be invited to submit full papers\, which should be between 6\,000 and 8\,000 words\, inclusive of references\, figure captions\, and endnotes. \nFor inquiries or further information\, please contact chen.schechter@biu.sc.il; mgutman@emef.ac.il \nFor more details about the journal\, visit: Journal of Educational Administration. \nFor the full call\, see the PDF below. \nCall for Abstracts Special Issue Wartime Leadership

SUMMARY:[IRN] Webinar ‘From Inclusion to Inclusiveness and Inclusivity: Towards Inclusive Excellence’
DESCRIPTION:📅March 26\, 2025 \n\n\n\n🕒4:00-5:00 PM Brussels (CET) \n\n\n\nThe IDG-GLOBAL-WERA IRN Bienvivance & Inclusive Excellence Webinar Series will host a webinar on March 26\, 2025\, from 4 PM to 5 PM (Brussels time) entitled ‘From Inclusion to Inclusiveness and Inclusivity: Towards Inclusive Excellence’\, led by Pr. Bénédicte Gendron\, Dr. Paolo Nardi\, and Pr. Michael Nettles. \n\n\n\nGandhi used to say\, ‘Be the change you want to see in the world’. Moving from an overview of the concepts of inclusion (to allow equity filling the gap or special needs)\, inclusivity (the active state of being inclusive)\, and inclusiveness (the resulting environment after practicing or implementing inclusivity)\, the webinar will delve into the emerging approach of Inclusive Excellence as a paradigm shift for Vocational Education and Training (VET). The theoretical and practical takeaways emerging from Gendron’s research and Nardi’s analysis on the GIVE project will be the focus of the presentation and trigger for the debate with those who are active in these areas. \n\n\n\nTo register: https://events.teams.microsoft.com/event/18be8636-2d5f-492c-8f9a-b44af53f7350@bcf29f09-6e86-42a4-ab38-3a1d7c6fa9ad/registration \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:[Task Force] Webinar: "How to set up research projects for international collaborations"
DESCRIPTION:🚀 Exciting News! 🚀 \nJoin the WERA Task Force “Global Research in Extended Education” for a webinar on setting up research projects for international collaborations!\n📅9 April 2025\, Wednesday\n🕒3 PM UK/4PM CET/12 AM KST\n📝 Register for free: https://forms.gle/vVGavXTwfFwq3ahQA \n\n\nABSTRACT\nInternational research collaborations often use approaches and methods from comparative education research. The essence of such collaborations lies in a shared academic interest or a common definition of a problem to be subjected to comparative analysis. The primary objective is to derive solutions to the problem\, as defined by the participants\, through international cooperation. At the project level\, comparable or differentiating results – representing both similarities and differences – emerge as secondary outcomes. In the course of collaborative project work\, intercultural challenges arise\, which often only become apparent as the process unfolds. The webinar will explore both the theoretical and practical frameworks underpinning international cooperation in education and highlight the opportunities and potential risks associated with international comparative collaboration.

SUMMARY:[IRN] Symposium 'Educational perspectives on emotions in teaching and learning for sustainability – Conceptualisations\, methodological questions\, empirical insights\, and pathways for future research'
DESCRIPTION:On behalf of the WERA International Research Network EMESER (Emotions in Environmental and Sustainability Education Research)\, we are pleased to share this call for submissions for the symposium ‘Educational perspectives on emotions in teaching and learning for sustainability – Conceptualisations\, methodological questions\, empirical insights\, and pathways for future research’ taking place online on April 10-11\, 2025. \nAbstract submission deadline: 31 December 2024 \nCommunication of review status: 31 January 2025 \nTo submit an abstract\, send an email to Sissy Kreid at sissy.kreid@ur.de. For questions regarding the symposium\, contact Emma Heikkilä at emma.heikkila@helsinki.fi. \nFor more information\, visit the EMESER page. \n\nDescription \nEmotions are an increasingly important focus within the research field of environmental and sustainability education (ESE). Learners and educators experience a wide range of emotions when they enter into learning environments\, while dealing with controversial and existential issues of (un)sustainability or as a result of education processes. The connection between emotions and (un)sustainability are manifold. On the one hand\, the multiple developments and crises of (un)sustainability are provoking different emotional reactions (like climate anxiety) or responses (outside-in perspective). On the other hand\, emotions are a main driver for engagement\, for example when learners are transforming their sustainability-related rage into concrete actions (inside-out-perspective). Educational organizations can create room for recognising and dealing with emotions and thereby empower individuals and groups to take action. Nevertheless\, there is only little systematic knowledge on how to deal with or address emotions in ESE. Additionally\, the question of how to address learners’ and/or educators’ emotions (including emotions of the public\, researchers etc.) goes along with fundamental ethical questions (for example\, how to avoid using emotions instrumentally). There is a growing number of studies on eco-emotions\, climate anxiety\, or grief mostly from a psychological perspective. Nevertheless\, the state of research on emotions in the context of ESE is still insufficiently systematized and other disciplinary perspectives (e.g.\, sociological\, feminist) are currently underexplored. Key questions are too rarely discussed\, like: \n\nWhich conceptualizations of emotion from other fields of research are best suited for ESE?\nWhich research methods are used and might be beneficial in the future to conduct in-depth research into sustainability-related educational processes?\nHow have emotions been addressed in ESE practice to catalyze transformation for sustainability? What should didactic methods for working with emotions look like and what role do educators play?\nWhat are implicit (normative/disciplinary/ideological/political) assumptions in addressing emotions in ESE research?\nWhat are aims and pathways for future research regarding emotions in ESE?\n\nWith the symposium we want to contribute to advancing the growing research field on emotions and ESE and create space for reflection and discussion between multiple perspectives. The symposium is part of the activities of an International Research Network called EMESER\, which brings researchers with an interest in emotions in ESE together and thereby broadens and strengthens research on emotions in ESE through encouraging discussion and collaboration. The symposium is free of charge. We invite abstracts for theoretical\, empirical and methodological contributions in line with this call. \nWe welcome scholars at any level of their academic career to contribute. A group of researchers from the network will select the contributions based on the quality and the fit to the core questions of the symposium. All submissions should deal with all three aspects: emotions\, sustainability\, and education. \nAbstracts should have a length of 500 words (excluding references) \n\nAbstract submission deadline: 31st of December\, 2024\nCommunication of review status: 31st of January\, 2025\n\nSubmissions can be sent to Sissy Kreid\, sissy.kreid@ur.de \nQuestions regarding the symposium can be sent to Emma Heikkilä\, emma.heikkila@helsinki.fi

SUMMARY:The 11th IEA International Research Conference (IRC)
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe 11th IEA International Research Conference (IEA IRC) will take place between 25–27 June 2025 at the Department of Humanities of Roma Tre University in Rome\, Italy\, (Via Ostiense\, 234) and will be preceded by pre-conference workshops on 23–24 June 2025\, which will focus on secondary analysis of IEA data. We are grateful to INVALSI and Roma Tre University who will be hosting us in Rome. \nThe 11th IRC is dedicated to the theme “Researching Education for Sustainable Futures” to focus on the importance of education for individuals and societies\, as well as the role of IEA studies in making education systems more relevant\, inclusive\, and just. \nIEA studies measure students’ mastery of subject matters as well as interdisciplinary areas of learning\, such as reading (PIRLS)\, mathematics and science (TIMSS)\, civic and citizenship education (ICCS)\, and computer and information literacy (ICILS). They do so in a way that acknowledges the rich context in which education occurs\, including the contribution of parents\, teachers\, and school principals\, and the influence of the curriculum on opportunities to learn. These aspects can individually and collectively contribute to improving education to create sustainable futures for students and society. \nThe IRC in Rome will be an opportunity for us to gather\, share\, and appreciate the ongoing and vast work invested in developing IEA studies\, improving analytical methods for analyzing data\, and using study results to advance educational policies and classroom practices. We look forward to welcoming you to Rome with a poster\, paper\, or symposium and a keen interest to engage with new and old colleagues over fruitful conversations along the beautiful River Tiber. \nFor more information on key dates and links to registrations and submissions\, visit https://www.iea.nl/news-events/irc/11th-international-research-conference-iea-irc.

SUMMARY:WERA Invited Symposium @EARLI 2025: 'Realizing Potentials - Global Challenges in Education Research'
DESCRIPTION:The World Education Research Association (WERA) will hold an invited symposium on 28 August 2025 from 8:30 to 10:00 am at the EARLI 2025 Conference in Graz\, Austria entitled ‘Realizing Potentials – Global Challenges in Education Research’. \n \nThis invited symposium acknowledges the mission that education and education research contribute to realizing potentials\, not least as a vital contribution to equity and social justice around the globe. Education systems worldwide face numerous common challenges. For this reason\, it would be highly beneficial for knowledge-building efforts to focus more strongly on collaborative international research. \n \nThe generation of descriptive and explanatory knowledge in comparative international perspectives\, while valuable\, is not sufficient as a foundation for equitable educational practices. This symposium will therefore discuss experiences of education research on globally relevant issues and ask a guiding question: If and how can international collaborative and interdisciplinary research unfold the potential to support adaptation to practice—irrespective of regional and situational differences? \n \nThis WERA Invited Symposium features contributions from Rocío García-Carrión (University of Deusto\, Spain) on ‘Leaving early from education and training in Europe: Turning challenges into opportunities for all children to thrive’\, Ingrid Gogolin (University of Hamburg\, Germany) on ‘Dealing with linguistic diversity – unlocking and realizing the literacy potential of every individual learner’\, and Heike Wendt (University of Graz\, Austria) on ‘Educational equity in Europe: 25 years of development in European primary school systems through the lens of different theories of educational justice.’ Maria Padrós Cuxart (University of Barcelona\, Spain) will serve as the discussant. The session will be chaired by Ingrid Gogolin and moderated by Icy Fresno Anabo (University of Deusto\, Spain). \n \nThe EARLI 2025 WERA Invited Symposium promises to be a thought-provoking exchange that highlights both the urgency and opportunity of global collaboration in education research.

SUMMARY:[IRN] Webinar: "Microcredentials and AI Supporting Inclusion"
DESCRIPTION:WEBINAR: “Microcredentials and AI Supporting Inclusion” \nNovember 27\, 2025\, 9.00 AM CET\nOn behalf of WERA-IRN “Inclusive Excellence & Bienvivance from School to Work (IE-B-SW)” (Convenors: Pr. Bénédicte GENDRON\, Dr. Paolo NARDI\, Pr. Michael NETTLES) \n\n  \nVET experts recognize several concrete challenges when it comes to the transition to work for people with disability including autism or Down Syndrome. They often lack recognized certifications\, often as a direct consequence of an assessment not inclusive by design. These challenges highlight the need for innovative solutions: can microcredentials\, personalized assessments\, and industry-led digital credentials really improve inclusion in education and employment contexts? \nStarting from a recent research on AI-Driven personalization of assessment and Micro-Credentials in New Zealand\, Stuart Martin will guide a dialogue on how AI can effectively tailor assessments to meet diverse learner needs\, showing the crucial role that microcredentials can play to foster more inclusive work environment\, engaging employers. \nGuest Speaker\, Founder\, George Angus Consulting: Stuart is founder of George Angus Consulting\, where he develops strategies to enhance vocational education and improve skills recognition internationally. He has conducted research on neurodiversity\, micro and digital credentials\, and lifelong learning\, as well as the first major piece of research on using AI in assessment. His work spans micro-credential policy\, digital credential development\, quality assurance\, accessibility\, and bridging education with industry needs. \nModerator Principal Research Scientist\, HAMK : Sanna Ryökkynen is an experienced vocational education and training (VET) professional with over 20 years in education. Her visions\, ambitions and mindset have been developed by seeing the VET field from different perspectives: as a teacher\, a manager\, a researcher\, a developer and an innovator. Currently\, she is a principal research scientist at Häme University of Applied Sciences\, School of Professional Teacher Education and Edu Research Unit. \nTO REGISTER : https://events.teams.microsoft.com/event/9cfbc251-06a5-42cd-aa69-c770066f7343@bcf29f09-6e86-42a4-ab38-3a1d7c6fa9ad/registration \nFor inquiries\, contact: benedicte.gendron@univ-montp3.fr

SUMMARY:[IRN] Digital Inclusion in Vocational Training: A Moving Target
DESCRIPTION:Digital Inclusion in Vocational Training: A Moving Target\n15.01.2026\, 4.00 PM CET \nIDGs hub – WERA-International Research Network- Bienvivance & Inclusive Excellence WEBINAR\n(Convenors: Pr. Bénédicte GENDRON\, Dr. Paolo NARDI\, Pr. Michael NETTLES) \nThe webinar will explore how digital inclusion is a way to foster social and educational inclusion and equity\, a key objective of VET systems\, and the focus of many institutional\, national and international initiatives. Still\, in the last years the very concept has evolved\, both due to technological and educational developments\, and need to be treated with new visions\, approaches\, and tools. Mr. Nascimbeni\, sharing his work at ETF\, will discuss this evolution and will present some cases that go in the direction of “radical digital inclusion”\, a way to make sure that VET activities are inclusive by default. This webinar is part of our ongoing commitment to foster dialogue and collaboration on inclusive education and wellbeing. Don’t miss this opportunity to engage with experts and peers. \nGuest Speaker: Fabio Nascimbeni\, Human Capital Development Expert in the European Training Foundation\nModerator: Veronica Vasilescu\, Strategic Development and International Relations\, Fondazione ENGIM Politecnico di Torin\, Turin\, Piedmont\, Italy \nRegistration via Linkedin: https://lnkd.in/dKJa5-KG\nTO REGISTER : https://events.teams.microsoft.com/event/8f0c2d2d-6fd7-4659-bbb8-88a2423e3966@bcf29f09-6e86-42a4-ab38-3a1d7c6fa9ad \nClick to view the flyer: Digital inclusion in VET- a moving target \n\n  \n
