SUMMARY:[IRN] Deadline: Special Issue Call for Papers "Multilingualism in School"
DESCRIPTION:The Journal of Research in Social Sciences and Language (JSSAL) \nMultilingualism in schools is a perennial topic in educational research. It is highly relevant today for several reasons: increasing globalization and population mobility\, high levels of international migration and refugee movements\, quick and easy access for individuals to digital language support tools. All of these factors contribute to increasing linguistic diversity among students around the world\, making multilingualism a key prerequisite for educational processes. \nThe aim of this special issue is to foster a deeper understanding of multilingualism in schools and to contribute to the advancement of inclusive and equitable educational practices\, by bringing together current empirical research on multilingualism in education from interdisciplinary perspectives. We invite scholars from various fields\, including but not limited to education\, linguistics\, psychology\,\nsociology and policy studies\, to join us in this endeavor by submitting their original research contributions. We welcome submissions of empirical research articles that employ quantitative\, qualitative or mixed methods approaches\, thereby enriching the discourse on multilingualism in education with varied perspectives and methodologies. \nTimeline: \n\nFebruary 28\, 2025: Manuscript Submission Deadline\nJuly 30\, 2025: Revision Request Decision by Special Issue Editors \nDecember 30\, 2025: Publication of the Special Issue\n\nJSSAL Submission Guidelines: \n\nRegister first with the JSSAL (jssal.com)\, if you are not a registered user yet. Please ensure that you have checked the “author” option in your profile.\nFollow the JSSAL submission guidelines (https://jssal.com/index.php/jssal/about/submissions) and author guidelines (https://jssal.com/index.php/jssal/authorguidelines).\nPlease tick the Box “Special Issue: Multilingualism in School”.

SUMMARY:[IRN] Deadline: Call for submissions for Symposium on ‘Educational perspectives on emotions in teaching and learning for sustainability – Conceptualisations\, methodological questions\, empirical insights\, and pathways for future research’
DESCRIPTION:On behalf of the WERA International Research Network EMESER (Emotions in Environmental and Sustainability Education Research)\, we are pleased to share this call for submissions for the symposium ‘Educational perspectives on emotions in teaching and learning for sustainability – Conceptualisations\, methodological questions\, empirical insights\, and pathways for future research’ taking place online on April 10-11\, 2025. \nAbstract submission deadline: 31 December 2024 \nCommunication of review status: 31 January 2025 \nTo submit an abstract\, send an email to Sissy Kreid at sissy.kreid@ur.de. For questions regarding the symposium\, contact Emma Heikkilä at emma.heikkila@helsinki.fi. \nFor more information\, visit the EMESER page. \n\nDescription \nEmotions are an increasingly important focus within the research field of environmental and sustainability education (ESE). Learners and educators experience a wide range of emotions when they enter into learning environments\, while dealing with controversial and existential issues of (un)sustainability or as a result of education processes. The connection between emotions and (un)sustainability are manifold. On the one hand\, the multiple developments and crises of (un)sustainability are provoking different emotional reactions (like climate anxiety) or responses (outside-in perspective). On the other hand\, emotions are a main driver for engagement\, for example when learners are transforming their sustainability-related rage into concrete actions (inside-out-perspective). Educational organizations can create room for recognising and dealing with emotions and thereby empower individuals and groups to take action. Nevertheless\, there is only little systematic knowledge on how to deal with or address emotions in ESE. Additionally\, the question of how to address learners’ and/or educators’ emotions (including emotions of the public\, researchers etc.) goes along with fundamental ethical questions (for example\, how to avoid using emotions instrumentally). There is a growing number of studies on eco-emotions\, climate anxiety\, or grief mostly from a psychological perspective. Nevertheless\, the state of research on emotions in the context of ESE is still insufficiently systematized and other disciplinary perspectives (e.g.\, sociological\, feminist) are currently underexplored. Key questions are too rarely discussed\, like: \n\nWhich conceptualizations of emotion from other fields of research are best suited for ESE?\nWhich research methods are used and might be beneficial in the future to conduct in-depth research into sustainability-related educational processes?\nHow have emotions been addressed in ESE practice to catalyze transformation for sustainability? What should didactic methods for working with emotions look like and what role do educators play?\nWhat are implicit (normative/disciplinary/ideological/political) assumptions in addressing emotions in ESE research?\nWhat are aims and pathways for future research regarding emotions in ESE?\n\nWith the symposium we want to contribute to advancing the growing research field on emotions and ESE and create space for reflection and discussion between multiple perspectives. The symposium is part of the activities of an International Research Network called EMESER\, which brings researchers with an interest in emotions in ESE together and thereby broadens and strengthens research on emotions in ESE through encouraging discussion and collaboration. The symposium is free of charge. We invite abstracts for theoretical\, empirical and methodological contributions in line with this call. \nWe welcome scholars at any level of their academic career to contribute. A group of researchers from the network will select the contributions based on the quality and the fit to the core questions of the symposium. All submissions should deal with all three aspects: emotions\, sustainability\, and education. \nAbstracts should have a length of 500 words (excluding references) \n\nAbstract submission deadline: 31st of December\, 2024\nCommunication of review status: 31st of January\, 2025\n\nSubmissions can be sent to Sissy Kreid\, sissy.kreid@ur.de \nQuestions regarding the symposium can be sent to Emma Heikkilä\, emma.heikkila@helsinki.fi

Many children born this century will never know a society that isn’t dominated by digital technology! \n \nDigital literacy is becoming more and more important\, but how are we ensuring that young people’s skills in this area are developing in the way they will need to participate safely in a highly digital world? \n \nICILS is the only international large-scale assessment that focuses solely on digital literacy education. It directly measures and reports on fundamental digital competencies for participation in the digital world. The study measures student achievement in Computer and Information Literacy (CIL) and Computational Thinking (CT). \n \nICILS also collects extensive targeted data relating to the contextual factors associated with students’ digital literacy learning in and outside of school. ICILS supports countries to make informed decisions about how best to prepare students for life in an age of constantly evolving digital technologies. \n \nThe Launch of the ICILS 2023 International Report and Results will take place on Tuesday\, 12 November from 10:00am Central European Time. \n \nThe livestreamed event will present results and key findings from IEA’s ICILS 2023 International Report. \n \nHosted in partnership with IEA and Aarhus University in Copenhagen\, the launch event will highlight new data collected from ICILS 2023 that are relevant for policy and practice. The event will be livestreamed\, and all are welcome to attend. We also look forward to hearing remarks from the European Commission on the day of the release. \n \nTo join and follow the event live on 12 November\, register using this link.

While South Korea was a war-torn society with low literacy levels\, today its young people achieve the highest level of education\, and it has become a role model of education-driven nation-building and resilience. However\, Korean school system struggles with educational inequalities and mental health problems due to its reliance on high-stakes testing and private tutoring. What lessons can developing nations learn from Korea? How can the Global South achieve SDG in effective and efficient yet holistic and equitable ways? What are the key enablers (protective factors) of at-risk students’ academic resilience in South Africa? Drawing upon his research using large-scale international data such as TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study)\, Prof. Jaekyung Lee shares cross-cultural policy insights for educational transformations in South Africa. \n  \nBIO \n\n\n\n\n\nProf Jaekyung Lee (Ph.D. University of Chicago) is a professor and former dean of education at the University at Buffalo\, SUNY. Being a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association (AERA)\, Prof Lee is an international leader in educational policy research\, assessment and evaluation\, particularly on the issues of educational equity and accountability. DESCRIPTION:Conference convener: Associate Prof. Dr. Jennifer Cartmel \nThis conference will take place from 11th to 14th September 2024 and is titled “Bricolage: Research Methodologies and Perspectives in Extended Education.” Bricolage is derived from two French terms: ‘Bricoleur’\, which means a creator or jack of all trades\, and ‘Bricoler’\, which is creating from whatever resources are at hand. In research\, Bricolage is the construction of ideas achieved by using whatever is available (a range of methods and methodologies). \nIt is intended\, through the conference research presentation\, that participants may gain new knowledge and understanding about research methodologies in extended education that can potentially be implemented regardless of the type of extended education setting or where it is based.

SUMMARY:WERA Pre-conference Workshop: Multilingual Literacies as Resources in Educational Biographies
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Leads: \nIngrid Gogolin\, Senior Professor at Universität Hamburg \nIrina Usanova\, University of Hamburg \nDescription: \nThe workshop addresses the complex development of multiliteracies in linguistically diverse contexts. The presented research is based on the data on reading and writing in multilingual adolescents in analogous and digital modes gathered in a German longitudinal study on language development in multilingual students (MEZ). The workshop addresses the interrelation of literacies in multilingual repertoires: their role as resources in the educational biographies of immigrant students. In discussing the influence of multiliteracies on learning\, innovative assessments of multilingual skills are presented\, and adaptability of these assessments to different national contexts is discussed. \nWith this workshop\, participants will \n\ngain an overview of the resources-oriented perspective on multiliteracies in multilingual students;\ndiscuss approaches to the assessment of multiliteracies in multilingual repertoires.\n\n

SUMMARY:WERA Pre-Conference Workshop: Learning to Design and Implement Education
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Leads: \nBarbara Schneider\, Michigan State University \nKatariina Salmela-Aro\, University of Helsinki \nStéphan Vincent-Lancrin\, OECD \n  \nDescription: \nIncreasingly countries are interested in implementing reforms that enhance academic\, social and emotional learning. The purpose of this workshop is to help researchers create intervention designs and evaluation strategies. Researchers will be given examples of logic models and evaluation designs and opportunities to create their own programs and receive feedback from researchers who have led innovative international interventions. The workshop co-directors\, Katariina Salmela-Aro\, Professor University of Helsinki; Stéphan Vincent-Lancrin\, Senior Analyst OECD; and Barbara Schneider\, Professor Michigan State University. All of these workshop leaders are currently directing international evaluation efforts. One of the key features of this workshop will be an emphasis on highlighting the challenges and benefits in conducting international rigorous evaluations of how to enhance\, support\, and sustain learning outcomes that are hard to measure\, such as creativity\, critical thinking\, curiosity\, and other social and emotional concepts fundamental to learning. The workshop will allow participants to discuss and learn about: \n\ndifferent types of experimental and quasi-experimental designs\, their strengths and limitations;\nhow to adapt those designs to real-life constraints;\ntheoretical models linking social and emotional learning and other types of learning;\ntwo specific projects currently in-progress at OECD and the US and Finland;\nhow to create your own projects and receive critique\n\nWe are encouraging researchers and policy makers from different countries to come to this meeting. Teams are welcome to participate including WERA governing participants. \n

SUMMARY:WERA Pre-Conference Workshop: How to Assess and Build Educator and Organizational Readiness to Foster the Learning and Thriving of All Students in Challenging Real-World Contexts
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Lead \nDr. David Osher\, Vice President & Institute Fellow at American Institutes for Research \nDescription \nSyntheses of the science of learning and development show that under the right conditions\, students can thrive socially\, emotionally\, and academically. This requires creating optimal conditions for learning and development\, informed by scientific evidence that can help educators and school realize Sustainable Development Goal 4—making real the right of every single child they encounter to experience inclusive and quality education. \nAccessing and operationalizing this knowledge is doable but not always easy.  This half-day workshop will: \n\noverview the overarching findings of the science of learning and development and implementation science with attention to their implications for educator\, organization\, and researcher practice;\ncurate key resources on the science of learning and development as well as implementation science research on readiness and the importance of implementation support;\nintroduce tools and strategies that can be used to plan\, assess\, and build powerful learning and developmental opportunities and environments consistent with the science of learning and development—and to do so in participants’ cultural and organizational context;\nintroduce tools and strategies that can be used to monitor and build readiness to implement new policies\, programs\, and practices that provide powerful learning and development opportunities; and\nprovide an opportunity for participants to interact with each other and the presenter.

SUMMARY:WERA Pre-Conference Workshop: Successful Academic Publishing: A Global Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Leads:  \nDr. Patricia Alexander\, Distinguished University Professor at University of Maryland\, College Park\nProf. P. Karen Murphy\, Distinguished Professor of Education at Pennsylvania State University \nDescription: \nWorldwide\, the capacity of early career scholars and graduate students to demonstrate productivity through their scholarly publications remains a hallmark of academic and professional success.  Nonetheless\, scholarly writing and publication are challenges for many faculty\, research scientists\, and graduate students who are still new to the process and\, thus\, can benefit from mentoring and support.  Professional associations like the World Educational Research Association can be of great help to emerging scholars\, and to those who mentor them\, by providing an insider understanding of the process\, making accessible the tools required to publish in quality academic outlets\, such as journals\, edited volumes\, or conference proceedings. Specifically\, this workshop delves into the foundations of successful publishing: formulating critical questions; conducting a study; organizing a manuscript; collaborating with others; and publishing research findings. The workshop will also consider what constitutes “quality” in quantitative\, qualitative\, and mixed method research.  The preparation of review articles will also be addressed. Along with these significant and broad topics\, there will be discussion of ethics\, open science\, research transparency\, access and equity\, and the social-cultural responsibilities of publication. Thus\, it is the purpose of this workshop to offer mentoring and support to emerging scholars who wish to learn more about scholarly writing and what is required to experience success in publication. Experienced researchers with heightened interest in mentoring and advising about publishing and the publication process are also encouraged to join.

SUMMARY:BERA Conference 2024 and WERA Focal Meeting
DESCRIPTION:It is a great pleasure to welcome delegates from across the United Kingdom and the world to the BERA Annual Conference 2024 with the WERA Focal Meeting. BERA is delighted to be partnering with WERA for this event which will be an excellent way to celebrate BERA’s 50th anniversary and WERA’s 15th anniversary as learned societies. Building on the record-breaking attendance at both BERA and WERA  2023 conferences\, we look forward to welcoming even more international delegates and providing a wonderful opportunity for delegates to disseminate research and network with like-minded colleagues from all across the world. \nFor this unique event\, we will gather in the northern city of Manchester. Manchester is known throughout the world for its football clubs\, its international cricket ground where we host our gala dinner and its vibrant music scene including in recent years Oasis\, the Smiths and the Stone Roses. Manchester has always been a city that has embraced innovation from the Industrial Revolution to more recently being the location where the atom was first split. The famous Rolls Royce car was first manufactured in the city. Manchester is a melting pot of cultures and languages\, with over 200 languages spoken\, making it a truly diverse and enriching place to explore. That strength in diversity also applies to our community of researchers and ideas that we hope to see presented at the conference. \nThe people of Manchester pride themselves on their warm welcome to visitors and so we look forward to returning to this vibrant\, modern city. \nBERA and WERA look forward to welcoming you to our joint conference – whether you are a first-time delegate or have been to several or indeed many over the past 50 years. The BERA-WERA partnership prides ourselves on the conference being both academically rigorous and socially enriching and we look forward to seeing you in Manchester. \nProfessor Mhairi C Beaton & Professor Rocío García Carrión\nConference and Events Committee Co-Chairs \n
