SUMMARY:WERA Pre-Conference Workshop: Successful Academic Publishing: A Global Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Leads:  \nDr. Patricia Alexander\, Distinguished University Professor at University of Maryland\, College Park\nProf. P. Karen Murphy\, Distinguished Professor of Education at Pennsylvania State University \nDescription: \nWorldwide\, the capacity of early career scholars and graduate students to demonstrate productivity through their scholarly publications remains a hallmark of academic and professional success.  Nonetheless\, scholarly writing and publication are challenges for many faculty\, research scientists\, and graduate students who are still new to the process and\, thus\, can benefit from mentoring and support.  Professional associations like the World Educational Research Association can be of great help to emerging scholars\, and to those who mentor them\, by providing an insider understanding of the process\, making accessible the tools required to publish in quality academic outlets\, such as journals\, edited volumes\, or conference proceedings. Specifically\, this workshop delves into the foundations of successful publishing: formulating critical questions; conducting a study; organizing a manuscript; collaborating with others; and publishing research findings. The workshop will also consider what constitutes “quality” in quantitative\, qualitative\, and mixed method research.  The preparation of review articles will also be addressed. Along with these significant and broad topics\, there will be discussion of ethics\, open science\, research transparency\, access and equity\, and the social-cultural responsibilities of publication. Thus\, it is the purpose of this workshop to offer mentoring and support to emerging scholars who wish to learn more about scholarly writing and what is required to experience success in publication. Experienced researchers with heightened interest in mentoring and advising about publishing and the publication process are also encouraged to join.

SUMMARY:BERA Conference 2024 and WERA Focal Meeting
DESCRIPTION:It is a great pleasure to welcome delegates from across the United Kingdom and the world to the BERA Annual Conference 2024 with the WERA Focal Meeting. BERA is delighted to be partnering with WERA for this event which will be an excellent way to celebrate BERA’s 50th anniversary and WERA’s 15th anniversary as learned societies. Building on the record-breaking attendance at both BERA and WERA  2023 conferences\, we look forward to welcoming even more international delegates and providing a wonderful opportunity for delegates to disseminate research and network with like-minded colleagues from all across the world. \nFor this unique event\, we will gather in the northern city of Manchester. Manchester is known throughout the world for its football clubs\, its international cricket ground where we host our gala dinner and its vibrant music scene including in recent years Oasis\, the Smiths and the Stone Roses. Manchester has always been a city that has embraced innovation from the Industrial Revolution to more recently being the location where the atom was first split. The famous Rolls Royce car was first manufactured in the city. Manchester is a melting pot of cultures and languages\, with over 200 languages spoken\, making it a truly diverse and enriching place to explore. That strength in diversity also applies to our community of researchers and ideas that we hope to see presented at the conference. \nThe people of Manchester pride themselves on their warm welcome to visitors and so we look forward to returning to this vibrant\, modern city. \nBERA and WERA look forward to welcoming you to our joint conference – whether you are a first-time delegate or have been to several or indeed many over the past 50 years. The BERA-WERA partnership prides ourselves on the conference being both academically rigorous and socially enriching and we look forward to seeing you in Manchester. \nProfessor Mhairi C Beaton & Professor Rocío García Carrión\nConference and Events Committee Co-Chairs \n

SUMMARY:Webinar “Children’s Perspectives in Swedish School-Age Educare”
DESCRIPTION:Presenters: Assoc Professor Karin Lager (Göteborg University)\, Assoc Professor Lina Lago (Linköping University)\, Senior Assoc Professor Helene Elvstrand (Linköping University) \n(June 11\, 2024\, 1 hour\, at 3 p.m. UK time) \nThis symposium focuses on how pupils themselves experience their everyday life in school-age educare centres. The presentation is based on several different data materials (Lager\, 2020) and Elvstrand & Lago (forthcoming) where interviews with pupils have taken place and where we have tried to find common threads between the various individual studies. The results reveal important values about what pupils themselves see as meaningful and important to them in their everyday lives\, as well as what expectations they have of the type of activities they will encounter in the school-age educare. In Sweden\, the last decade has seen policy changes in school-age educare\, where quality issues in various ways have been in focus. In this presentation\, we also want to contribute to raising questions about what can be seen as quality if we start by listening to pupils and taking their voices seriously.
