WERA Participates in 41st ANPEd National Meeting

Woon Chia Liu, Dean of Teacher Training at the National Institute of Education of Singapore, acted as Keynote Speaker and Invited Symposium participant during the WERA Conference at the 41st ANPEd National Meeting in Manaus.

The challenges of teacher training in a world marked by volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity (VUCA) were presented from the Singapore perspective by Woon Chia Liu during the WERA conference at the 41st ANPEd National Meeting , held in Manaus from October 22nd to 27th.

Her keynote speech, which opened the conference Formação de professores para um mundo (Teacher Training for the World) explained how in the space of just fifty years, the educational approach adopted by Singapore transformed the country from ”a fishing village to a school that we can be proud of”. The Singapore strategy emphasizes the importance of joint action between universities, schools and government as a means of strengthening educational policies, as well as promoting language and technology in the classroom, and the adoption of visualization methodology as opposed to memorization. She also discussed the interaction between theory and practice in teacher training, as a strategy to enable future teachers to have the autonomy and repertoire to deal with everyday challenges in the classroom.

The conference was part of the WERA Symposium, which composed the event’s international program. Maria Luiza Sussekind (Unirio/Southeast vice-president of ANPEd) lead the debate and Maria Beatriz Luce (UFRGS/Unipampa/first secretary ANPEd) acted as coordinator.
