Motivating Students: Motivational Climates that Engage Students
Summary
The research objective of this International Research Network (IRN) is to design and implement studies, especially cross-cultural studies, related to student motivation, with a specific focus on aspects of the motivational climate that are associated with student engagement and learning. These investigations will include students and teachers from many of the 21 countries represented by the co-conveners and participants. Core research questions include: (1) Which aspects of the motivational climate are the most important for student engagement and achievement within different contexts (e.g., courses, countries, cultures)? and (2) What motivational climate interventions can be used to increase students’ engagement and learning? Some IRN participants have experience working collaboratively with other researchers, publishing in well-known journals, presenting research at international conferences, mentoring emerging scholars, and presenting workshops to instructors. However, the IRN also includes participants with less experience in these areas, and they will collaborate with the more experienced participants.
